For families living with epilepsy, courage is often found in the moments no one else sees.
It can be found in the quiet aftermath of a seizure, in the uncertainty of not knowing what tomorrow will bring, and in the determination to keep moving forward despite exhaustion, fear and heartbreak.
For Stacey and her son Marlon, those moments of courage inspired a song.
Through their musical project, Stacey & Son, they have transformed their family’s experience with epilepsy into Brave – an emotional and deeply personal song inspired by Stacey’s daughter, Stella, and the challenges, resilience, and hope that have shaped their journey.
When Stacey’s daughter Stella was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2022, life changed in an instant.
“My daughter Stella was diagnosed with epilepsy in May 2022 after she had her first tonic-clonic seizure out of nowhere, which happened unexpectedly one Sunday morning.”
Since then, Stella has experienced multiple seizure types, and the impact has extended far beyond the seizures themselves.
“Epilepsy has had a huge impact on Stella’s life,” Stacey says, explaining that activities Stella once loved, including school, community involvement and hydrotherapy, became much harder.
Like many families affected by epilepsy, Stacey and her son Marlon have faced the emotional toll of living with uncertainty, hospital visits and the challenges of watching someone they love endure seizures and medication side effects.
“My son and I wish people understood that epilepsy is more than just having seizures. Epilepsy is not just physically exhausting it’s also emotionally draining.”
Amid these challenges, music became an outlet. After discovering Marlon’s talent for guitar, the pair began playing together and eventually formed Stacey & Son.
Their latest song, Brave, recorded and produced by Daniel Giaccio, was inspired by Stella and the strength she shows every day.
“I was inspired to write the song Brave after Stella had a big seizure one night,” Stacey recalls. “I remember in that moment, I was struck by how strong and brave she was, and later that night I wrote Brave.”
The song explores the realities of living with epilepsy while celebrating the resilience of those affected by the condition. One lyric in particular captures the heart of the message:
“The chorus ‘There’s something brave that keeps you here’ recognises quiet courage, the kind people may not always see or understand.”
Through Brave, Stacey and Son hope other families living with epilepsy feel seen, understood and less alone.
“The message we hope the community and other people take away from the song would be that there is more to epilepsy than just seizures. It’s a whole different life that affects people every day even when they aren’t having seizures.”
Dedicated to everyone living with epilepsy, Brave is a powerful reminder that courage is often found in the quiet moments – and that no one should have to face epilepsy alone.
